Science fiction often serves as humanity’s laboratory for testing radical ideas about our future. In works ranging from “The Orville” to George Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” creators have explored societies that transcend our current limitations, particularly our economic systems built around scarcity. These fictional worlds challenge us to consider what happens when technology creates material abundance—and more importantly, what moral and philosophical transformations must precede such a transition.
The Technological Promise of Post-Scarcity
In “The Orville,” humanity achieves a technological breakthrough with the matter synthesizer—a device capable of creating anything atom by atom, effectively eliminating material scarcity. Commander Kelly explains this transformation to Lysella, a visitor from a less advanced planet: “It was the single most transformative moment in our history. When all your material needs are provided for at no cost, it changes the entire game.”
This fictional technology mirrors our current historical moment, where advances in artificial intelligence, automation, and computing power have the potential to create unprecedented abundance. The development of AI resources by companies like OpenAI, Nvidia, and Apple suggest we’re approaching an inflection point where computational ability—once centralized and limited—becomes democratized and abundant.
However, these technologies remain artificially scarce. OpenAI initially restricted access to their AI capabilities, highlighting a familiar pattern in our current economic system: abundant resources are consistently transformed into scarce ones for profit or control. Whether it’s bottled water, patented medicines, or paywalled digital content, capitalism doesn’t merely operate within conditions of scarcity—it actively creates and maintains it.
The pattern extends to human labor itself. Under current economic systems, people must trade their time—often their entire lives—for basic necessities. Work becomes less about creating value or contributing meaningfully to society and more about proving one’s “worthiness to exist” through economic productivity.
The promise of AI and automation technologies isn’t just about creating material abundance—it’s about fundamentally challenging this paradigm. When machines can perform an increasing share of necessary labor, we’re forced to confront difficult questions about the relationship between work, worth, and resources.
The Hidden Costs of Utopia
Ursula K. Le Guin’s haunting short story “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” presents a seemingly perfect society whose utopian existence depends entirely on the suffering of a single child kept in miserable conditions. This powerful metaphor forces us to confront an uncomfortable truth about our current systems: prosperity often comes at a hidden cost.
We see this dynamic playing out in our real world. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many observers pointed to increasing wealth inequality, noting how the richest individuals saw their fortunes grow tremendously while many ordinary people struggled. Some viewed this as a direct transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich—a zero-sum game where one person’s gain necessitates another’s loss.
This perspective has fueled calls for wealth taxes and other redistributive policies. However, this view oversimplifies the complex nature of wealth creation and valuation. When a homeowner sees their property value double in a year, no physical cash has moved from one person to another. Similarly, when Jeff Bezos’ Amazon stock increases in value, no direct transfer has occurred from workers’ pockets to his.
Wealth isn’t always a fixed pie being passed around—it’s a dynamic concept tied to market conditions, perception, and systems. This doesn’t diminish concerns about inequality, but it does suggest that simple redistribution may not address the structural conditions that create disparities in the first place.
The Omelas story challenges us to look more deeply at the foundations of our prosperity. Are we willing to accept abundance built upon hidden suffering? The citizens who “walk away” from Omelas represent a powerful moral stance—a refusal to participate in systems fundamentally built on exploitation, no matter how comfortable they make life for the majority.
Technology Without Moral Evolution: The Gendel III Parable
In “The Orville,” Lysella attempts to smuggle matter synthesizer blueprints back to her home world, believing that technology alone can solve her planet’s problems of scarcity and inequality. Her logic seems straightforward: if resources are unlimited, conflicts over those resources should disappear.
Commander Kelly reveals the flaw in this thinking by showing Lysella the tragic history of Gendel III, a planet where Union explorers shared advanced technology prematurely. The result wasn’t utopia but apocalypse: “Nation states fought each other. Wars broke out everywhere…because they all wanted to use the advancements for personal gain and for political dominance. They wiped themselves out in five years. Nine billion people. Gone.”
This fictional catastrophe mirrors patterns from our own history with technological advances. When the researchers who discovered how to mass-produce insulin sold the patent for just one dollar, they believed this life-saving medicine should be available to everyone. Yet today, despite improved technology and production capacity, insulin remains unaffordable for many, and people die because they cannot access a medication that costs pennies to produce.
The same pattern emerges with information technologies. The internet was created as an open architecture that could democratize knowledge and connect humanity, yet we’ve seen how these same tools can be weaponized for surveillance, manipulation, and the concentration of power.
The Gendel III parable suggests that technology without moral evolution doesn’t create utopia—it simply amplifies existing human tendencies, including our worst impulses toward domination and control. Advanced weapons in the hands of warlike societies don’t create peace; they create more devastating wars. Financial technologies in exploitative economies don’t eliminate poverty; they create more sophisticated forms of extraction.
This insight challenges the techno-optimist view that innovation alone will save us. The microeconomist might argue that greater efficiency and productivity through AI will naturally lead to greater abundance for all. But history suggests otherwise: without corresponding shifts in our social arrangements and values, technological abundance often becomes concentrated in fewer hands.
The Human Template: Can We Change Our Wiring?
How deeply ingrained are the values that drive our current systems? The sources raise profound questions about whether humans can overcome instinctive templates that shape our behavior and social organization.
These templates manifest across cultures in different forms but follow similar patterns. In some developing nations, success might be measured by the number of goats one owns, while in Western societies, it might be property, investment portfolios, or social media followers. The specific markers change, but the underlying template—hierarchical organization and status competition—remains remarkably consistent across human societies.
This raises a crucial question: Can we subvert these instinctive templates? Can we override what some refer to as the “lizard brain”—the primitive neurological structures that drive competitive, status-seeking behaviors? Can we, for instance, overcome basic physiological responses like blushing when embarrassed, which signal our deep social programming?
The political dimensions of this question are evident in the ideological divide described in the sources. “The left looks at the right as barbarians. The right looks on the left as reality deniers (postmodernist).” This polarization reflects fundamentally different views about human nature and malleability.
This divide is exemplified by contrasting philosophical traditions. Ayn Rand’s works like “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead” champion individualism and suggest that unequal outcomes reflect natural differences in ability and effort. Her philosophy celebrates the exceptional individual who refuses to conform to collective demands.
On the opposite end, socialist and communist ideals emphasize our capacity to transcend self-interest for collective welfare. The historical failure of communist experiments like the Bolshevik revolution—which initially promised abundance but ultimately created greater scarcity and suffering—raises sobering questions about these assumptions.
The Bolsheviks blamed the Kulaks (wealthy peasants) for poverty, claiming “you are poor because they are rich.” This zero-sum thinking justified eliminating an entire class of people but failed to create the promised prosperity. Instead, agricultural production collapsed, leading to widespread famine.
This historical example highlights the dangers of assuming we can easily rewire human nature or that simple redistribution will create abundance. Yet it doesn’t mean we’re forever trapped in our current patterns either.
Redefining Success: Cultural Evolution Over Time
While we may doubt our ability to fundamentally rewire human neurological templates, history shows we can certainly reshape what populates those templates. Success and status look radically different across cultures and time periods.
In medieval Europe, religious piety might determine one’s standing. In warrior societies, martial prowess was paramount. In some contemporary developing nations, as noted in the sources, “the number of goats owned indicates your social standing.” These varying definitions of success demonstrate that while status hierarchies might be hardwired, what constitutes status is remarkably flexible.
This insight offers a pathway for transformation. Rather than attempting to eliminate human status-seeking entirely—likely an impossible task—we could redirect it toward more constructive and less zero-sum markers of success.
For example, imagine societies where status derives primarily from one’s contributions to community well-being, artistic expression, or environmental stewardship rather than material accumulation or power over others. Some indigenous cultures have maintained exactly such value systems for thousands of years, suggesting these alternatives are entirely compatible with human nature. Of course they have also maintained the same or similar living standards for the same thousands of years!
The evolution of our notions of success happens continuously, though often unconsciously. Consider how social media has created entirely new status hierarchies based on likes, followers, and engagement—metrics that didn’t exist twenty years ago yet now profoundly shape behavior, especially among younger generations.
If such rapid shifts can occur unconsciously through technological change, it suggests conscious redirection is possible too. This wouldn’t require overriding our basic neural wiring but rather redirecting it toward more constructive expressions—a form of cultural evolution rather than biological revolution.
The Paradox of Abundance: Becoming Better People First
Perhaps the most profound insight from “The Orville” comes in Lysella’s realization about the relationship between technology and human development. Looking around at the advanced society, she remarks: “Wow, look at this place. It’s a utopia. If we had all this, we could be better people.”
The response she receives inverts her assumption entirely: “It doesn’t quite work like that. You gotta flip it. You get all this by becoming better people.”, I wonder if our Ai Tech Bros like Elon Musk have considered this as they preach and sell super abundance?
This paradox challenges the techno-determinist view that abundance creates virtue. Instead, it suggests that moral evolution precedes and enables true abundance. The matter synthesizer isn’t what makes the Orville’s future better than ours. Rather, it’s their willingness to share, to break cycles of artificial scarcity, and to invest in each other’s growth that makes such technology both possible and beneficial.
This perspective aligns with Ernst Bloch’s “Principle of Hope,” which suggests that utopia exists in the “not yet”—woven into reality as potential rather than as a fixed destination. We glimpse this potential in moments where people choose cooperation over competition, openness over enclosure, and long-term flourishing over short-term gain. When a company chooses to make its AI research open source rather than proprietary, when a community establishes shared resources that all can access, when people voluntarily contribute to projects from which they’ll receive no direct benefit—these moments represent what Bloch called “anticipatory illuminations” of what could be. The issue is that at the bottom of the well of providing Ai to the masses at internet-scale, we have finite compute resources for inference, and finite energy consumption, all of which are not free!
These illuminations suggest that the transition to post-scarcity isn’t primarily technological but moral and philosophical. It requires us to question fundamental assumptions about worth, work, and wealth that have dominated economic thinking for centuries. But in my opinion the new markers of success still need to align with human lizard brain behaviour.
Reimagining Ethics for an Age of Abundance
What might an ethical framework for a post-scarcity world look like with key shifts in thinking?
First, moving beyond zero-sum conceptions of wealth. Understanding that value creation isn’t always a transfer from one person to another opens space for more collaborative economic models. When wealth is primarily derived from knowledge, creativity, and networks rather than physical resources, abundance for one doesn’t necessarily mean deprivation for another. Even today there is a split over the question is wealth a zero-sum game.
Second, separating human worth from economic productivity. In current systems, one’s worth is often implicitly tied to their economic output. This becomes increasingly untenable as automation renders many traditional forms of human labor unnecessary. A post-scarcity ethics would recognize intrinsic human worth independent of economic contribution.
Third, embracing stewardship over ownership as our relationship to resources. This shift would recognize that many forms of wealth—from natural resources to knowledge commons—are collective inheritances rather than individual properties to be enclosed and exploited.
Fourth, privileging long-term flourishing over short-term gains. Current economic systems heavily discount the future, leading to decisions that maximize immediate returns at the expense of sustainability. A post-scarcity ethics would reverse this, prioritizing interventions that enhance long-term collective wellbeing.
Teaching these new ethics would require transformations across multiple domains—from early childhood education to economic policy to cultural narratives. Rather than abstract moral instruction, the most effective teaching would come through creating environments and incentives that naturally elicit these values in practice. We would have to hope these teachings are not seen as indoctrination!
For instance, educational systems could emphasize collaborative problem-solving over competitive individualism. Economic policies could reward companies that create positive externalities rather than those that privatize gains while socializing costs. Cultural narratives could celebrate figures who contribute to collective flourishing rather than those who simply accumulate wealth or power.
Climbing the Mountain Together
The journey toward post-scarcity resembles what Chris Wilrich calls “The Odyssey Problem” in reference to the ancient Greek epic. Like Odysseus returning home, we know our destination but face countless obstacles and temptations along the way.
This framing suggests that utopia is not a destination we suddenly arrive at but a journey—an ongoing process of growth and improvement. It’s less like reaching a summit and more like discovering new routes up a mountain we’re all climbing together.
The technological advancements that promise material abundance—AI, automation, renewable energy, and others—provide new pathways up this mountain. But technology alone won’t get us to the summit. The Gendel III parable warns that giving advanced technology to societies unprepared for it leads not to utopia but to destruction.
Our climb requires developing new capacities: greater empathy and cooperation, longer time horizons, more inclusive decision-making, and deeper understanding of complex systems. These capacities aren’t just moral virtues but practical necessities for managing the powerful technologies we’re creating.
The most promising developments combine technological innovation with social innovation. When AI researchers open-source their work rather than hoarding it, when renewable energy is deployed through community ownership models, when digital platforms are designed for user empowerment rather than exploitation—these approaches demonstrate how technology and moral evolution can progress together.
As we stand at this crossroads in human history, with unprecedented capacities for both creation and destruction, the question isn’t whether post-scarcity is technologically possible. The question is whether we’re willing to undergo the moral and philosophical transformations necessary to make such abundance sustainable and beneficial for all.

This virtuous cycle offers hope that we need not wait for perfect human beings to begin building better systems, nor for perfect systems to develop better humans. Instead, progress happens through their mutual evolution—technology and morality climbing the mountain together, finding new paths upward with each step.
